<p>The easiest and most flexible solution would be to add page
choosers to your landing page that would allow your end users to
"configure" the featured section. Behind the scenes, this would
essentially be the same setup as a slider where you would loop over
the selected pages and generate the necessary HTML for the featured
slider. This solution is definitely more manual for your end user,
but an added benefit could be that it holds them accountable.</p>
<p>Your other proposed solution of adding a "featured" flag would
definitely work as well. Very similar to the other solution, I am
imagining that you would select maybe the top "X" number of
articles with the flag and generate the necessary HTMl for the
slider. You could maybe sort them by oldest first depending on your
requirements.</p>
<p>Please let me know if you have any questions.</p>
<p>Thanks!</p></div>Ryan Griffithtag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/341282032014-08-18T17:52:52Z2014-08-18T17:52:52ZCreating a special feature news article<div><p>I was leaning toward the first option but is there a way to
ensure that if an article is the "featured" section that it
wouldn't also be duplicated in the list of most current article
directly below it?</p>
<p>As of now it is just pulling the top 4 most recent articles
(with the featured it would be 5 total) so should how should I
achieve this?</p>
<p>Comparatively, how difficult would it be to do the second option
compared to the first? I'm just trying to think of the easiest way
to maintain this over time.</p></div>matthew.wrentag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/341282032014-08-18T18:23:00Z2014-08-18T18:23:00ZCreating a special feature news article<div><p>Hm, my initial thought would be to check if an article exists
within the featured section while you are generating the rest of
the listing. You could either pass the featured articles as a
parameter, or just look up the Element tree to find the featured
articles. Then, just use a simple <code><xsl:if></code> to
test the count of featured pages with the current article's ID.</p>
<p>Please let me know if you have any questions.</p>
<p>Thanks!</p></div>Ryan Griffithtag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/341282032014-08-18T19:54:49Z2014-08-18T19:54:49ZCreating a special feature news article<div><p>I have a few questions about going about it this way then.</p>
<p>First, I'm having a little trouble getting the XSLT to find the
content of the Data Definition for the page. Also I'm not sure how
much content I should include into the Data Definition. Is there a
way that I can just include a page & image selector and the
format can place its content (i.e. Title & description) or
would I have to include that in the page's Data Definition?</p>
<p>Second, when looking at the page's XML, I noticed that each
article has its own ID. Is it possible to tell a format to ignore
any article placed in the featured article position elsewhere on
the page? This might be making it overly complicated but it was a
thought. I might just need some more clarification on what you
suggested.</p>
<p>Anyway, below are the format and xml of the index page.</p>

<p>There are a few areas of the Format that raise some flags for
me.</p>
<p>I noticed your featured article section doesn't appear to be
accessing the correct information. Specifically, I am not seeing
<code>news/main/featured-image//path</code> anywhere in the sample
XML you provided. I believe you would want
<code>//calling-page/system-page/system-data-structure/featured-image/path</code>.</p>
<p>Also, based on the XML you provided, you will only ever have one
featured section. I would recommend moving the code that displays
the featured article up into the initial <code><xsl:template
match="/system-index-block"></code>, before you output the rest
of the articles.</p>
<blockquote>
</blockquote>
<p>It looks like you will need to set or increase the
<strong>Render Content Depth</strong> option for the
<strong>featured-article</strong> chooser, which is why you are not
seeing the page's structured data. Try entering a value of 4 and
that should do the trick.</p>
<p>Also, I wanted to note that, based on the XML you provided, it
looks as though you are only including the calling page's content,
and your Format appears to be trying to access structured data for
the articles (eg when displaying the graphic for each article when
they are listed). Because of this, you will never see a graphic for
the articles.</p>
<blockquote>
</blockquote>
<p>What you will need to do is tweak your
<code><xsl:for-each></code> that lists the articles so it
filters out the featured article.</p>
<p>If there will only ever be one featured article, this would be
as simple as adding some XPath that filters out the article with
the same <strong>link</strong> as the featured article:</p>
<pre>
<code><ul>
<xsl:for-each select="system-page[link != //calling-page/system-page/system-data-structure/featured-article/link]">
...
</xsl:for-each>
</ul></code>
</pre>
<p>If there will be more than one featured article, you could use
something like the following:</p>
<pre>
<code><ul>
<xsl:for-each select="system-page">
<xsl:if test="count(//calling-page/system-page/system-data-structure/featured-article/link = $link) = 0">
...
</xsl:if>
</xsl:for-each>
</ul></code>
</pre>
<p>Note: I did not have a chance to test these snippets out, but I
believe they should be able to provide a good starting point.</p>
<p>Please let me know if you have any questions.</p>
<p>Thanks!</p></div>Ryan Griffithtag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/341282032014-08-19T19:28:06Z2014-08-19T19:28:06ZCreating a special feature news article<div><p>I think I incorrectly labeled those paths. The XML is actually
on the last several lines. Specficially<br></p>
