at 3:00 p.m. &amp;#160;A Cappella Choir and The Calhoun County Civic Chorale will join forces to perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart&amp;#8217;s Requiem, at First United Methodist Church in Anniston. The choirs will be accompanied by an orchestra of JSU students, faculty and professional string players from the Birmingham area.
<br/>
<br/>
The performance will be conducted by JSU Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Patricia Corbin and will feature a quartet of student soloists, Christina Booker (Huntsville), Soprano, Meg Griffin (Carrollton, GA), Mezzo Soprano, Kaylon Gilley (Piedmont), Tenor, and David Lawshe (Jacksonville), Baritone.
<br/>
<br/>
The history of the composition of the Requiem is shrouded in myth and legend, most famously represented in the 1984 movie Amadeus. Mozart was commissioned to write the Requiem in secret toward the end of his life and died before its completion. Franz Xaver S&amp;#252;ssmayr, who was a student of Mozart, was asked by Mozart&amp;#8217;s wife, Constanze, to complete the work and it is his version that will be performed at this concert.
<br/>
<br/>
The ticket prices for the performance are $6 for Regular tickets and $3 for JSU students and area students (with ID). The JSU student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association will be hosting a &amp;#8220;Canned Food Drive&amp;#8221; at this performance to benefit the food ministry, &amp;#8220;Community Enabler&amp;#8221;, of First United Methodist Church. Audience members who bring a canned food donation will receive $1 off their ticket price. Please be generous!</main-content>

<main-content>FEBRUARY 15, 2013&amp;#160;&amp;#160;-&amp;#160;&amp;#160;The 2013 legislative season is just starting and it has been busy. The Higher Education Partnership is pleased to report a positive beginning for the state&amp;#8217;s public universities.
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;"/>
</span>
<p>With the university community having worked hard to develop a strong bond with many of the members of the legislature, it has been evident that the university voice is postured to have input into an ever growing number of issues. The Partnership appreciates the work of so many supporters during the campaigns. Further, we acknowledge and encourage you to continue to build relationships with the members of the Alabama Legislature.&amp;#160;
<br/>
<br/>
University employees should be pleased to know that Dr. David Bronner called to thank the Higher Education Partnership and the network of public universities for the positive response during the recent vote for the RSA board. The Partnership members and friends played an important role in the vote. THANKS for returning the ballots! Your voice was heard.</p>
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;"/>
</span>
<p>Here are a few additional action items to report:</p>
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;"/>
</span>
<ol>
<li>The Education Trust Fund budget proposal for 2013-2014, that was introduced by Governor Robert Bentley, was a successful start for the universities. While the growth in the higher education portion of the ETF budget is around two percent for most institutions, the overall amount of increase is a good starting point for this year&amp;#8217;s discussions. The really good news about this proposal is that the universities are receiving this increase at a time when the Alabama Education Association and others in K-12 have a huge list of projects. The leadership in the legislature has stood with us during the first couple of weeks. Let&amp;#8217;s stay active in our encouragement of the members. Having a big crowd for Higher Education Day (February 28 at 11 am in front of the StateHouse)&amp;#160;&amp;#160;is really important this year because we need to say thanks to our friends!</li>
<li>The move by the legislature to establish a statewide technology office is being watched closely by the universities. Efficiency is certainly a goal that is supported by the Partnership. However, the universities want to make sure that this Secretary of Technology does not limit the universities&amp;#8217; capacity to operate in areas of importance. Technology is critical to the universities being successful.</li>
<li>In an effort to enhance the environment for on-line education and effectively compete with an ever-growing number of competitors, the Partnership and your lobbyists are working with multiple pieces of legislation. The desired outcome is to give more individuals an opportunity to be connected to Alabama&amp;#8217;s public universities and to make sure that the financial picture related to on-line courses works within the overall business plan of each institution.</li>
</ol>
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">
<span face="Calibri" size="3" style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;"/>
</span>
<p>Finally, the Partnership is in the midst of the planning and preparation for another successful Higher Education Day. We remind every member and friend to make plans to attend. The bands will be festive, the lunch will be good and the speaker list is filled with decision makers. The key is for the universities to actively &amp;#8220;turn out the crowd.&amp;#8221; Bus transportation is available from every campus so let us know if you need additional information. Otherwise, please plan to join us on February 28 at 11:00 am.</p>

<main-content>
<p>On the eve of America's entry into World War II, TIME magazine reported that to the German masses the United States meant "sky-scrapers, Clark Gable, and Artie Shaw." Some 42 years after that, in December l983, Artie Shaw made a brief return to the bandstand, after thirty years away from music, not to play his world-famous clarinet but to launch his latest (and still touring) orchestra at the newly refurbished Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, New York.</p>
<p>On Friday evening, March 1, this new Artie Shaw Orchestra, described as "one of the swingingest outfits around," will play a free concert at Jacksonville State University's Leone Cole Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.</p>
<p>Under the direction of clarinetist Matt Koza, the group hews to the Shaw legacy, and continues with the time-tested formula that has always pleased a full spectrum of audiences from the &amp;#8220;Begin the Beguine&amp;#8221; fans of yesteryear to the new jazz fans who want to imbibe in an exciting and heady evening of Swing.</p>
<p>
<strong>A Brief History of the Artie Shaw Big Band</strong>
</p>
<p>Artie Shaw was born in New York City on May 23, 1910 and was in the top echelon of bandleader/soloists from the great swing era of 1935-45. He made his first public appearance as a leader in 1936, in a Swing Concert (history&amp;#8217;s first) held at Broadway&amp;#8217;s Imperial Theatre. Shaw could scarcely have known that within a short time he would make a hit record of a song called &amp;#8220;Begin the Beguine,&amp;#8221; which he once jokingly refers to as &amp;#8220;a nice little tune from one of Cole Porter&amp;#8217;s very few flop shows.&amp;#8221;</p>
<p>Shortly before that he had hired Billie Holiday as his band vocalist (the first white bandleader to employ a black female singer as a full-time member of his band). The break-through hit record catapulted him into the ranks of top bandleaders and he was immediately dubbed the new &amp;#8220;King of Swing.&amp;#8221; Today, Shaw&amp;#8217;s recording of &amp;#8220;Begin the Beguine&amp;#8221; sells thousands and has become one of the best-selling records in history.</p>
<p>
<strong>The Baton is Passed</strong>
</p>
<p>In 1954 Artie Shaw made his last public appearance as an instrumentalist when he put together a new Gramercy 5 made up of such superb modern musicians as pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Tal Farlow, bassist Tommy Potter, et al. He gave his blessing in the 1980s to an Artie Shaw Orchestra led by Dick Johnson, who led the orchestra for 25 years until his retirement in 2008. The baton has now been passed to clarinetist Matt Koza.</p>

Matt Koza</strong>
</p>
<p>Clarinetist /saxophonist Matt Koza is a native New Yorker, born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn. He studied saxophone at Binghamton University-State University of New York, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1995. During the fall 1994 semester, Matt was awarded a Lemelson Fellowship to study music at Hampshire College, Amherst, MA. He attended graduate school at Youngstown State University in Ohio and Queens College-City University of New York, where he was awarded the 1999 ASCAP Foundation Louis Armstrong Scholarship.</p>
<p>In 2000 Matt began playing tenor saxophone with the Artie Shaw Orchestra, directed by Dick Johnson. During his tenure as the featured saxophone soloist with the orchestra they toured extensively worldwide, accompanying the likes of Tony Bennett, Jack Jones and Buddy DeFranco, and were featured at the Newport Jazz Festival. In 2004 the orchestra had the honor of performing at the dedication celebration of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.</p>
<p>Matt is proud to assume the position as the director of the
<em/>
Artie Shaw Orchestra, and after years of being inspired by Dick Johnson's virtuoso clarinet performances, he is honored to be the next to carry on Artie Shaw's legacy.</p>
<p>
<strong>Artie Shaw&amp;#8217;s Career</strong>
</p>
<p>Artie Shaw led several different bands throughout the 1930's, 40's and 50's, always trying new ideas. A musical innovator and always a perfectionist, he was a fantastic clarinetist, and his music remains some of the most interesting of the big band era.</p>
<p>1930-36: Artie started working in New York and became a top studio alto sax and clarinet player.</p>
<p>1936-37: He Jed his first band, an unusual Dixieland-style group with horns, guitar, bass, drwns, and a string quartet. Tony Pastor was on sax and vocals.</p>
<p>1938-39: He switched to a more traditional big band. Notable members included Georgie Auld, Buddy Rich, Tony Pastor, Jerry Gray, and singers Billie Holiday and Helen Forrest. He had his first smash hit recording, Begin the Beguine. Artie and the band were featured in the 1939 movie Dancing Coed.</p>
<p>1940: Shaw recorded and toured with a large band with a string section added. His hits from this hand were Stardust, Frenesi, Moonglow, and Dancing in the Dark. Notable players in this band, playing the solos on Stardust, were Billy Butterfield on trumpet and Jack Jenny on trombone. Artie and the band were featured in the 1940 movie Second Chorus with his Concerto for Clarinet. This band also featured a smaller combo, the Grammercy 5, consisting of clarinet, trumpet, harpsichord, bass, and drums.</p>
<p>1941: He eliminated the strings, going back to a standard big band, with 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 5 saxes. guitar, piano, bass, and drums.</p>
<p>1942-43: Artie joined the Navy, and led a Navy band in the South Pacific, with some outstanding musicians, including the well -known trumpeter Conrad Gazzo.</p>
<p>1944-45: Out of the Navy, he had a dance band, featuring musicians such as Barney Kessel on guitar, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, and vocalist Mel Torme. This band recorded extensively, including his hit of S'Wonderful and many more.</p>
<p>1946-49 He played and recorded classical music. appearing in concert with several major symphonies.</p>
<p>1949: He started a jazz-oriented big band playing bebop, with 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes, and guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Al Cohn and Zoot Sims were featured in.this band.</p>
<p>1953-54: Artie formed the final version of his small group, the Grammercy 5, including Hank: Jones on piano and Tal Farlow on guitar, with vibes, bass, and drums. He then quit the music business completely in 1954.</p>
<p>1983: Artie asked Dick Johnson to lead a new Artie Shaw Orchestra.</p>
<p>2004: Artie Shaw passes away at the age of 94.</p>

<p align="center" style="text-align: left;">On Thursday, February 14, 2
<sup>nd</sup>
Chance, Inc. will join with activists around Alabama and the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of&amp;#160;V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.</p>
<p>As part of the event, from 10 a.m. - noon, JSU community members and anti-violence advocates will speak at the amphitheatre at Jacksonville State University. There will be dancing, monologues and music. Members of JSU faculty, student groups (JSU Social Work Club and Women&amp;#8217;s Issues Support and Empowerment (WISE)) and local policy makers will participate.&amp;#160;</p>
<p>This will be followed by an event in Anniston from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. There, area community members, activists, feminists and anti-violence advocates will also share their experiences at the Anniston Yoga Studio, 905 Noble Street, along with Laura Hutchinson, Pastor of the First Christian Church of Anniston. Again, there will be dancing, monologues, and music.&amp;#160;</p>
<p>Jenniffer Salda&amp;#241;a Whyte of JW Fitness Crew will lead Zumba at both locations.</p>
<p>ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten, disfigured or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS violated. One billion daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, lovers and friends violated. On February 14, 2013, V-Day&amp;#8217;s 15
<sup>th</sup>
&amp;#160;anniversary, 2
<sup>nd</sup>
Chance will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, academics, Tribal leaders, politicians and women and men across the globe to express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women and girls.</p>
<p>&amp;#8220;When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,&amp;#8221; said Eve Ensler, founder of the V-Day movement. &amp;#8220;Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.&amp;#8221;&amp;#160;</p>
<p>
<strong>About V-Day
<br/>
</strong>
V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler's award winning play&amp;#160;
<em>The Vagina Monologues</em>
and other artistic works. In 2012, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place, produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $90 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, reopened shelters, and funded over 14,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq. Over 300 million people have seen a V-Day benefit event in their community. V-Day has received numerous acknowledgements including Worth Magazine's 100 Best Charities, Marie Claire Magazine's Top Ten Charities, one of the Top-Rated organizations on Philanthropedia/Guidestar and Great Nonprofits. V-Day's newest campaign is ONE BILLION RISING which will culminate on 021413 with a global action worldwide.</p>

<main-title>Clint Carlson departing JSU as V.P., Administrative &amp; Business Affairs</main-title>
<newDate/>
<endDate/>
<home-event-title/>
<main-content>
<p>After a decade of service at Jacksonville State University, Clint Carlson has announced his departure as V.P., Administrative and Business Affairs, effective Feb. 28, 2013.&amp;#160; JSU President Dr. Bill Meehan says of Carlson&amp;#8217;s departure, &amp;#8220;Over the last ten years, JSU has seen significant advances in our administrative services, financial affairs, physical plant and business operation as a direct result of Mr. Carlson&amp;#8217;s leadership, not the least of these accomplishments being a continued &amp;#8216;A&amp;#8217; Standard and Poor&amp;#8217;s bond rating.&amp;#8221; Mr. Carlson has accepted a position at Clemson University. Ronnie Smith, a JSU Board of Trustees member, adds to Dr. Meehan&amp;#8217;s sentiments, saying, &amp;#8220;Clint Carlson has been a valuable part of JSU during his tenure. He has been an excellent steward of JSU&amp;#8217;s financial assets over a period of time, which has been economically challenging due to reduced state support. Under his guidance, JSU continues to be a sound institution financially. He has supported the administration and trustees through significant and successful capital projects. I am personally grateful for the support he provided to me as a trustee, always available to answer my questions in a professional and candid manner. He will be missed.&amp;#8221;
<span style="font-size: 14px;">&amp;#160;</span>
</p>
<p>Allyson G. Barker, CMA, has been named acting V.P., effective Mar. 1.&amp;#160; &amp;#8220;Mrs. Allyson Barker, university controller, will be the acting vice president until we identify a candidate for approval by the board later this year. Mrs. Barker has been associated with the university for more than twenty-five years and will be an excellent intermediate in this position,&amp;#8221; says Dr. Meehan. A forty-year veteran in public, manufacturing and educational accounting, Mrs. Barker received her B.S. in accounting, as well as her M.B.A., from JSU.&amp;#160; Prior to her position as controller, Mrs. Barker was the director of finance and accounting at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind for seven years. From 1985 &amp;#8211; 87, she was a research analyst for JSU&amp;#8217;s Center for Economic Development. Mrs. Barker has served under Mr. Carlson for over ten years and says, &amp;#8220;I hate to see Clint leave. I have learned so much and wish him well. I am excited about this new opportunity for me and see it as a career fulfillment. I appreciate the confidence the university and Dr. Meehan have placed in me.&amp;#8221;&amp;#160;</p>

<p>
<em>
<strong>UPDATED Feb. 5, 2012-- This event is now free to students of all ages, JSU faculty and staff.</strong>
</em>
</p>
<p>In recognition of black history month and following a tremendously moving performance by KB Solomon during the groundbreaking ceremonies for Freedom Riders Park in Anniston, Jacksonville State University is bringing the internationally known basso profundo and former JSU student back to the university for a one night only performance of his one-man musical about Paul Robeson entitled &amp;#8220;Speak of Me As I Am.&amp;#8221;</p>
<p>The music, words, spirit and life of the iconic musician, actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson will come alive in KB Solomon&amp;#8217;s portrayal, which is set for Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. at JSU&amp;#8217;s Ernest Stone Performing Arts Center.&amp;#160; The one-man show is described as a musical, a play, and an experience.&amp;#160; For those who are unaware of the magnitude of Robeson&amp;#8217;s career, Solomon&amp;#8217;s show is a poignant and inspiring tribute.&amp;#160;</p>
<p>Paul Robeson, the son of a runaway slave, won a four-year scholarship to Rutgers University and, as the only African American in attendance, graduated valedictorian after earning 15 letters in four different sports. A football All American for two years, Robeson was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1995.</p>
<p>He graduated Columbia Law School, appeared in 11 films including &amp;#8220;Jericho&amp;#8221; and &amp;#8220;Proud Valley,&amp;#8221; appeared in numerous stage musicals including &amp;#8220;Showboat,&amp;#8221; and became a popular concert, radio and recording artist.&amp;#160; Robeson was one of the pioneers of the civil rights movement and was a fearless warrior for civil rights, not only for African Americans but also for workers and oppressed people around the world.&amp;#160;</p>
<p>An Anniston native, Solomon has performed principal roles in operas and with symphonies around the world. He chose to write the one-man show after hearing so many people say he reminded them of Robeson.&amp;#160; Solomon&amp;#8217;s rare basso profundo sound makes the many popular songs Robeson sang such as &amp;#8220;Old Man River,&amp;#8221; &amp;#8220;America the Beautiful.&amp;#8221; There is a Balm in Gilead.&amp;#8221; &amp;#8220;The House I Live In,&amp;#8221; and many more come to life in the show, as they are interspersed during the dramatic reminiscences of Robeson&amp;#8217;s life and career.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;</p>
<p>Appearing as Robeson, Solomon brings to light Robeson&amp;#8217;s political stand and reflects upon the price Robeson paid.&amp;#160; KB appears as Paul returned from the &amp;#8220;Time Untime&amp;#8221; to give an account of his stand and to address today&amp;#8217;s America with inspiring dialogue, patriotic and popular songs.&amp;#160;</p>
<p>The pianist for the show is Equity Digital recording artist, Michael Dulin of Birmingham.&amp;#160; Classically trained at the famed Juilliard School in New York, Dulin has enjoyed success as a performer, producer/arranger, and composer of original music for radio, television, film and theatre.&amp;#160;&amp;#160; His 2012 album &amp;#8220;These are the Moments&amp;#8221; won top honors in piano from New Age Music.&amp;#160;</p>
<p>Solomon has devoted more than five years in researching, writing and developing &amp;#8220;Speak of Me As I Am,&amp;#8221; which was featured at the National Black Theatre Festival.&amp;#160; He is now set to launch a world tour following his performance at JSU.</p>
<p>Admission is $20 for the general public; free for students of all ages. For tickets contact the Stone Performing Arts Center Box Office at 256-782-5648.</p>

<p>The JSU Honors Program will be holding its annual S.H.O.E. (Scholars Helping Others Excel) drive during the month of February. Please donate any new or gently used shoes at any of the drop boxes located around campus. Each pair of shoes will go to the Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center to help those in need. The Honors Program appreciates all the donations from year's past and hopes this year will exceed last year's amount of 200 shoes!</p>

<p><code>An error occurred while rendering asset preview: Error on
line 166: The entity "rsquo" was referenced, but not
declared.</code></p>
<p>I suspect the issue is the line where you are escaping the
title:</p>
<p><code><p><a
href="${href}">$_EscapeTool.html($title.value)</a></p></code></p>
<p>I changed this to use <code>$_EscapeTool.xml()</code> and that
seemed to resolve the error:</p>
<p><code><p><a
href="${href}">$_EscapeTool.xml($title.value)</a></p></code></p>
<p>Let me know if this does the trick or if you have any
questions.</p>
<p>Thanks</p></div>Ryan Griffithtag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/252993362013-02-25T21:14:26Z2013-02-25T21:14:26ZHELP! Homepage events not updating<div><p>Did you fix it on our system? It seems to be working now lol</p>

<p>I suspect the <strong>rsquo</strong> entity may have been
removed, causing the <code>EscapeTool.html()</code> method not to
throw an error.</p>
<p>As you mentioned, I would recommend switching that out for
<code>EscapeTool.xml()</code>. I believe this method is a bit more
lax when it comes to entity encoding.</p>
<p>Have a great day!</p></div>Ryan Griffith
