<p>I get this error when rendering a feed block inside Cascade (v
6.7) using a Google Reader feed URL:<br>
An error occurred: Could not parse feed location <a href=
"http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/user">http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/user</a>...:
Connection timed out</p>
<p>I am able to render the feed in a browser. Has anyone been able
to render feeds from Google Reader inside Cascade?</p>
<p>Thanks.</p></div>Allietag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/47543812011-01-17T14:22:20Z2011-01-17T14:22:20ZRender Feed from Google Reader<div><p>Google Reader is a tool for helping you read a collection of RSS
feeds. There is an RSS feed built into Google Reader for each
user's subscriptions, but that feed only works when you are logged
in as that user.</p>
<p>Are you trying to pull a single feed or a feed of ALL your
subscriptions? If you're trying to pull a single feed, you should
pull the feed from that specific subscription instead of Google
Reader as a whole. Feed Blocks within Cascade should work fine
provided you're referencing a specific site's RSS feed.</p>
<p>Hope this helps.</p></div>Charlie Holdertag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/47543812011-01-18T16:11:32Z2011-01-18T16:11:32ZRender Feed from Google Reader<div><p>Thanks for the info, Charlie. I am trying to pull a collection
of feeds from Google Reader. Can Cascade (6.7) support this?
Thanks.</p></div>Allietag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/47543812011-01-18T19:48:36Z2011-01-18T19:56:38ZRender Feed from Google Reader<div><p>So I looked into this a little bit more...</p>
<p>Cascade supports any kind of standard feed format (e.g. RSS 1/2,
Atom). Again... The issue with Google Reader is that those feeds
are not public once they are collected within Reader.</p>
<p>However, I have done some testing and found a workaround.</p>
<p>To pull an aggregate of feeds from Google Reader you can create
a folder to contain the subscriptions that you would like to be
part of the aggregate feed and make that folder public within the
Reader Settings. Once you've done that, you should see a link to
"view [the] public page" of that newly public folder. That page
will have a link to an Atom feed that will work within Cascade.
It's VERY important to remember to grab that Atom feed URL and not
just the URL to that public page.</p>
<p>Here's a step by step process for doing ALL of that in case this
is new territory:</p>
<p>A. <em>Login</em> to the Google Reader account that has the
feeds you would like to pull in to Cascade.</p>
<p>B. <em>Navigate to your Google Reader Settings to Manage
Subscriptions</em>. There are two ways to do this: 1. In the top
right eyebrow navigation, there should be a drop-down labeled
"Settings" with a "Reader Settings" sub-menu option. This will take
you to your Preferences where you can click the tab to view your
Subscriptions; 2. On the home screen once you login, at the very
bottom underneath the list of all your feeds, there is a link to
"manage subscriptions."</p>
<p>C. <em>Create a folder to place the feeds in</em>. Choose one of
the feeds that you would like to pull into Cascade by checking the
box to the left of the feed title. To the right of the feed title,
click the drop-down labeled "Change folders..." for THAT specific
feed and choose "New Folder" from the options. You should be
presented with a text input field with which to provide a name for
the new folder. Once you've typed in a name and submitted the form,
the name you just supplied should be listed below the "Change
folders..." drop-down for THAT feed to indicate that the feed was
added to the folder.</p>
<p>D. <em>Add other feeds to the folder</em>. Now you can select
all of the feeds you would like to add to that folder by checking
the appropriate boxes and selecting your newly created folder from
the "More actions..." drop-down menu. Similar to when the folder's
name appeared underneath the "Change folders..." drop-down the
first time, you should now see that folder listed for each feed
that you selected to add to that folder.</p>
<p>E. <em>Make the folder public</em>. Click the "Folders and Tags"
tab to the right of the "Subscriptions" tab. You should see the
name of the new folder that you just created underneath the "Your
starred items" and "Your shared items" lines. (NOTE: If you do not
see your folder, simply click the link to go "Back to Google
Reader" and then use Step B to get back to this page. This should
refresh the list of folders and allow you to see your newly created
folder.) Check the box to the left of the folder name and select
"Public" from the "Change sharing..." drop-down menu near the top.
The small RSS icon should change colors from gray to orange and you
should see the word next to the icon change from "private" to
"public" as well.</p>
<p>F. <em>Grab the Atom feed link</em>. After you've made the
folder public, you'll see a set of links appear to the right of the
folder. The first item in that list should be "view public page."
You can click that link to see an HTML-driven, public page of all
the feeds you'd like to pull into Cascade. On the right-hand side
of the page, there should be a link for the Atom Feed of this page.
Depending on what browser you are using, you can: 1. Right-click
the link to copy it into your clipboard; 2. Click the link to open
up the Atom Feed and copy the URL from the browser's address bar.
Different browsers render feeds in different ways, so there's no
standard way for copying the Atom Feed's link into your
clipboard.</p>
<p>You should now have the link you will need to insert into a Feed
Block in Cascade. I apologize for the cumbersome workaround.</p>
<p>PLEASE let me know if you still have any questions or if any of
these steps do not make sense.</p></div>Charlie Holder
