Using asset factory plug-ins to store a unique id in a data definition

We have a data definition that will publish an article to an xml file. When we create the asset we want to have a plugin go look up an oracle sequence next value an store that with the data definition. Then when the article is published we will use xslt to add that unique id to the xml as an attribute.

We do know that we can use the asset id in cascade but we want a value that is more URL friendly than than the asset id. One that a user could memorize and recall if they needed to do so in the future.

Can this be done with a asset factory plug-in? Our instance of Cascade uses oracle but if we needed to, we could also use another instance of oracle.

When you say "store that with the data definition", do you mean store it in the structured data of a particular page?

If that is what you mean, you cannot currently do that with a plugin. However, you should be able to do it with the API changes coming in 6.8.
