"An error occurred during editing: null"

Sometimes it occurs right after a workflow transition, sometimes it occurs when bypassing workflow entirely.

    Could you please attach:
    1. the XML for the Workflow Definition you are using
    2. a screenshot of the page you are editing at the time of the error
    3. information about which part of the workflow you are in when this occurs

    1. Attached
    2. Not practical. The situation has been resolved, and I'd rather not set it off again.
    3. The error occurred in the "YES: Request publishing of Asset" choice, as soon as it was submitted.

My best guess is that the problem came about because the group referenced in recipient-groups briefly did not exist (it was deleted, then re-created). The problem went away when I scrapped the workflow and started over, referencing a different group.

I just attempted to reproduce this on our system on v6.4.5. When I clicked the "YES: Request publishing of Asset" in the Workflow, I got an operation successful message and everything completed normally despite the fact that the Site_Custodians-CareerServ group did not exist.

    Please let me know if:
    1. you are running a different version and can confirm this behavior
    2. you run into this again
    3. find any more information about how you may have reproduced it.

    We are currently using '6.2 - r12765'.

I also tried reproducing this using your steps on 6.2 with no success. I'm going to tentatively close it for now. Please let us know if it happens again or you're able to provide any more details. Feel free to re-open this issue at any time.

This problem seems to be occurring by running blocks through workflow.
Is this a bug, or are blocks not really meant to be in workflows?

    Hi,

I looked into this and it is indeed a problem. It seems that placing blocks into certain workflows will not work correctly and will cause the Null Pointer Exception that you mentioned in your original post. This is a known issue which will be corrected in a future version of Cascade Server. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Is it known exactly what in a workflow is causing the problem, so I can avoid doing it?

Not quite yet. I did play around with your specific workflow, however, and found that it seems to work if I remove the merge trigger from the very first system step.
