I believe this behavior is due to the Outputs from the new
Content Type being completely different from the old one, so when
the form reloads to reflect the change the assignments are replaced
with that of the new configuration set.

I was able to find
this related suggestion on our Idea Exchange. I highly
recommend voting this up if you would like this feature to be
considered for a future release.

In the meantime, you're best bet would be to use Web Services to
perform the Content Type change. Specifically, you can read the
page's configurations and record whatever is in the

pageRegions
, which would be the page-level
assignments. Then, when changing the Content Type you would
re-apply these page-level assignments.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Ryan Griffithtag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/381420042015-10-13T20:07:34Z2015-10-13T20:07:34ZPreserving page level regions when assigning a new configuration set

Thanks Ryan!
I'll look into using Web Services and let you know if I have any
questions.

espanae
