I want to "delete" a folder from one of our sites but i want to keep it for history. So i thought i can create a new site that will act as an archive of sorts. So how can i move a folder from one site to another?

    Hi Tatiana,

You can move the folder from one Site to another by viewing the folder and using the Move/Rename tab. Using the Parent Folder chooser, you should be able to select a folder from another Site as long as you have access to that Site.

Note: simply moving an asset will cause existing references to continue to point to that asset, which can cause broken or incorrect links.

One thought I had was you could copy the Site that contains the folder and remove all of the assets except the folder you wish to archive, but keep the necessary things that you would need to render any pages within the Folder, such as Templates, Configuration Sets, etc. Then, export that Site so you can retain a copy of it outside of Cascade Server. If you were to need to access the folder again, you could simply import the Site.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    R,

So if I copy the current Site to a new Site, there is no references between two Sites, right?

    R,

Also, if I initiate a deletion of a folder, I’d get a message with the list of pages with references to that folder, right?

    Hi Tatiana,

So if I copy the current Site to a new Site, there is no references between two Sites, right?

Correct, references within the Site being copied will be updated to the new Site; so they will not link to one another. Existing references to the Site being copied will remain referencing the original Site and not the newly created Site.

Also, if I initiate a deletion of a folder, I’d get a message with the list of pages with references to that folder, right?

I believe you will only see a list of references when you attempt to delete assets within the folder, not the folder itself. This is because you can'y link to a folder directly. I believe the only references you would see (when viewing the References tab) would be Asset Factories and Publish Sets because here you can select a folder for placement folder and to publish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

Another question about this.. If i copy folder A and name it folder B and leave it in the same Website, then if i delete folder A, what happens to the references to folder A files? Would they be pointing to respective folder B files or not?

    Hi Tatiana,

All references to folder A will be retained when you copy folder A, so deleting folder A would result in links that reference assets that no longer exist.

Feel free to provide a description of what you are looking to accomplish and I will gladly try to provide you with some solutions or ideas.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

I did describe scenario in the beginning of this case.

So I am getting another issue..

I copied “/applications/marine/cuni/” folder to “/_archived_do_not_publish/archive-applications/archive-marine/archive-cuni-012615” folder within the same project. And I see that some links within “/_archived_do_not_publish/archive-applications/archive-marine/archive-cuni-012615” did NOT get updated to “/_archived_do_not_publish/archive-applications/archive-marine/archive-cuni-012615” but still point to “/applications/marine/cuni/”.

    What could be the cause?

Below is the code before and after the copy. See underlined linked did NOT update. Why??:

    <a href="/applications/marine/cuni/txt_fpso" onmouseout="$('Vessel').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreVesselButton.gif')" onmouseover="$('Vessel').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreVesselButtonOver.gif')"><img alt="Offshore Vessel" border="0" height="57" id="Vessel" src="/render/file.act?path=/applications/marine/cuni/images/OffShoreVesselButton.gif" width="191" /></a><br /> <a href="/applications/marine/cuni/app_power#a2" onmouseout="$('Vessel1').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreWindButton.gif')" onmouseover="$('Vessel1').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreWindButtonOver.gif')"><img alt="Offshore Wind" height="57" id="Vessel1" src="/render/file.act?path=/applications/marine/cuni/images/OffShoreWindButton.gif" width="191" /></a>

    TO

    <a href="/_archived_do_not_publish/archive-applications/archive-marine/archive-cuni-012615/txt_fpso" onmouseout="$('Vessel').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreVesselButton.gif')" onmouseover="$('Vessel').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreVesselButtonOver.gif')"><img alt="Offshore Vessel" border="0" height="57" id="Vessel" src="/render/file.act?path=/_archived_do_not_publish/archive-applications/archive-marine/archive-cuni-012615/images/OffShoreVesselButton.gif" width="191" /></a><br /> <a href="/applications/marine/cuni/app_power#a2" onmouseout="$('Vessel1').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreWindButton.gif')" onmouseover="$('Vessel1').writeAttribute('src','images/OffShoreWindButtonOver.gif')"><img alt="Offshore Wind" height="57" id="Vessel1" src="/render/file.act?path=/_archived_do_not_publish/archive-applications/archive-marine/archive-cuni-012615/images/OffShoreWindButton.gif" width="191" /></a>

    Hi Tatiana,

My apologies for overlooking your original explanation.

Below is the code before and after the copy. See underlined linked did NOT update. Why??:

Unfortunately, the underlined link did not come through. To confirm, are you referring to the link /applications/marine/cuni/app_power#a2? If so, this is because the page app_power is missing from that location. Because the referenced asset does not exist, Cascade Server is not treating the link as an internal, trackable the link.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    R,

It is NOT missing from the location. Why would you think that? I think it’s because of # anchor. Because I checked at least 5 files and all the links that didn’t get updated with new folder are the ones with # anchors. So unless there is another explanation, you should file it as a bug. Because that’s kinda a big deal.

Also, is there a request in idea exchange to list references to files when deleting multiple assets or a folder with assets? Because if I can delete one file and get notified if there are references to it, it doesn’t make sense that I don’t when I delete two files.

    Hi Tatiana,

My apologies, while I was looking at the folder structure for applications/marine/cuni I must have overlooked the app_power page.

Because it appears the only link that did not update to the newly copied folder location has an anchor, I am curious if for some reason the folder copy operation is not correctly rewriting links with anchors. Let me do some additional testing to see if I can reproduce the behavior. I will be in touch as soon as I have additional information.

In the meantime, you could try adjusting the link to the page to use [system-asset] pseudo tags to force Cascade to track the link. So you would have something like the following: <a href="[system-asset]/applications/marine/cuni/app_power[/system-asset]#2">. Another, less ideal option, would be to try removing the anchor.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    R,

Making any of the suggested changes would require “touching” ever file.

    Hi Tatiana,

I wanted to follow up to let you know I was able to reproduce the issue of links with anchors not properly updating during a folder copy operation. I was also able to reproduce this behavior with Site copy, where the link with the anchor still referenced the original Site.

I went ahead and logged a known defect. Feel free to use this link to track the progress of this issue or keep an eye out for it on our Release Notes site.

I tested my suggestion of using [system-asset] and confirmed adding the pseudo tag does not appear to have any affect on the link being rewritten, so please disregard that suggestion.

Unfortunately, at this point there really is no work around other than locating these incorrect links and updating them to point to the correct asset.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!
