I always recommend using the Search/Replace tool because I have found it to be more successful at finding terms than the Basic or Advanced search functionality. The reason behind this is that the Basic/Advanced search uses Lucene indexing which places index files on the application server. These indexes have to be rebuilt every once in a while (System Menu -> Utilities -> Search Indexing -> Rebuild Index).

The Search/Replace tool does not use Lucene. It will search blocks, pages, formats, and templates but will not check metadata or structured data.

There is an internal improvement item that we will be working on in an attempt to try and make these searches more like one another so that there is less confusion concerning why some searches return results while others do not.

Hope this helps to clear things up.

Timtag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/30014632010-09-20T20:32:42Z2010-09-20T20:32:42ZSearching for links in Cascade

On Sep 20, 2010, at 1:33 PM, Tim wrote:

Thanks, Tim. I never thought to use "Search & Replace" since I wasn't looking to replace anything - but it works much more reliably than Search (for the type of searching that I tend to do). I appreciate the tip!

All the best,
I should have made it clear that when using the Search/Replace tool, you don't necessarily have to replace anything (since it's a 2-step process). Anyone using the Search/Replace tool can simply do the search portion of it to locate the assets and then cancel before replacement (or click away).

Yes, Tim - I think you were clear about that - I realize that you have to specify a replacement string, but can cancel.

Thanks,
