Windows Patching and Cascade Server

Good afternoon,

Are there any specific processes to follow or gotchas to watch out for regarding Windows patching and automatic updates for the server Cascade is installed on?

Has anyone ran into any reason scheduled Windows updates would interfere with system reliability other than the momentary server restart?

Thanks!

    Hi Justin,

I haven't ever had reports of Windows updates affecting installations of Cascade Server. As long as the operating system contains a supported JVM for Cascade to use everything should be fine. If you're using Windows to host your database server as well, you'll probably want to make sure that Cascade is shut down if/when that server requires a restart. Then you can just start the application again once the dependent database service is up and running.

Let me know if you have any followup questions! Perhaps others can chime in here with their experiences as well.

    Good afternoon Tim,

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately, our database is hosted by a separate team from our instance of Cascade Server, by a database administration team that also manages the databases of over 100 other database applications. The team managing the Cascade application server has a similar workload, and supports applications from across the state. With the two support teams as busy as they are, I just don't think it will be possible for us to have Cascade Services shutdown whenever the database is restarted.

What sort of issues would you expect to occur if Cascade Server services are left running while the database server restarts? Any ideas on how to work around them if we need to?

    Thank you!

You actually might be OK here. My initial worries were that something with the connection pool might go haywire, but I tested stopping my local MySQL instance while Cascade was running and then started the database up again and the application seems fine.

Let me know if you have any additional questions! Otherwise, have a great weekend!
