Do I need to recreate roles for the site or make use of the
existing roles set of global type?

Correct, so you would want to create a Site Role(s) that will
define what abilities the users have within the Site and the
Application, these can mimic the pre-defined Global Roles. These
abilities include things like as access to the Publisher, Admin
Area, Zip Upload, Workflows permissions, etc.

Once you set up the new Site Roles, you assign these Roles to
the Site through the Site Administration area and assign users
and/or groups to these Roles.

For permissions within the Site, this is done similarly to the
Global Area, through the use of permissions via the
Access page for Assets (ie Folders, Pages, Files, etc.). These
permissions can be applied to a Group or on a per-user basis.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

the migration. Is there a way to copy roles in the global area and
be able to assign them to site type?

Maytag:help-archives.hannonhill.com,2010-02-09:Comment/268624852013-05-15T20:37:41Z2013-05-15T20:37:41ZGlobal to Site Migration: Global roles to site roles

They are not copied over because, after migrating to Sites,
Global Roles are used only for access to global areas such as the
Publish Queue and System Preferences. Site Roles are used to define
access to the individual Sites.

When you create a new Site Role, you can base it off of an
existing Global Role. This can be done by using the Based
on original role: dropdown to pre-fill the Site Role's
abilities with the abilities from the Global Role.

If you are running Cascade 7.2+, there is also a new feature
that may be helpful for determining what your users can do within
Cascade, Effective Abilities. This gives you an overview
of what abilities the given user has within a selected Site, or the
Global area.

The permission should stay intact; however, because the Base
Folder is changing, the permissions for the Base Folder may not (at
least, I am not seeing any recent changes that would indicate this
behavior changed).

If possible, I would recommend performing the migration within a
test instance prior to performing the migration in production. If
the test migration is not possible, you may ant to try and take
note of how you have permissions set up in the event you need to
mimic them after the migration.
