Message that another user has updated page

We've just upgraded to 7.2.2. Several times users are getting the message "Another user updated the current version of this asset while you were editing. Submitting again will override these changes resulting in potential loss of important data." when no one else has been editing the page other than themselves. Is there a way to turn off the Auto draft saving? I think it's confusing for our users.

    Hi Charla,

I've tried reproducing this locally with as many different scenarios I can think of (with me being the only User accessing the Page) and I haven't been able to get this message to appear. Do your Users have any specific steps they are taking that they might be able to provide us with in order to replicate this issue?

At the current time there is no way to disable auto-saving of Drafts.

It happened to me and to another user. I know it will happen to others; it's
just been a quiet week. It almost seems related to the time it takes to
modify a page. If you have it open and you've done some other things and
then come back and submit, then that message appears. I'll try and do
    further testing.

    Hi Charla,

Tim is off on vacation for the week so I wanted to follow up.

Thank you for providing the additional information. Please keep us posted if you are able to identify steps to reproduce this behavior during your testing. In the meantime, we will keep an eye out to see if other clients report this behavior as well (or if we run into it during our local testing).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

At SLCC, I have two of my web technicians reported the same message yesterday and today (I am not sure if this happend before, we just upgraded to 7.2.2. a week ago) Each of them were working in the different folders, and we are pretty certain no one else was editing the pages when the message popped up.
The message appears when a user attempts to "Submit" a page. I can send a screenshot, but it's nothing fancy, just a message.
I saw another report on this issue in these discussions, I think, under the General issues.

    Hi Ryan,

Here’s a copy of the email from my technician describing the issue, and the screen shot is below the message. The second reported message –“To discard the draft…” appears almost every time the page is submitted, and “The another user…” – once in a while. The issue is intermittent, we haven’t determined the pattern, but it definitely is generated at the ‘submit’ page action.

    ----- repot copy begins ----
I just got the other error message again.

I haven’t saved a draft and no one else should be working on the catalog-new/programs folder so there shouldn’t be a draft.

I thought I would send this to you as well in case it is connected to the other error.

    [cid:[email blocked]]

I have been getting both errors interchangeably during the same time period, I haven’t changed my process and it does not occur on every page so I’m really scratching my head on how to debug this one.

The only common behaviors for the errors are that they happen when you are submitting an asset, but that means it could be pretty much anything.

    Hi Svetlana,

Thank you for the additional information.

Please let us know if you are able to identify steps to reproduce the "Another user..." message, we have not been able to reproduce this behavior other than having multiple users edit the same Asset at the same time.

Regarding the draft message, what version did you upgrade from? Your technician's description sounds like he is not aware of the new auto-save draft feature that was introduced in 7.2. For example, they will receive the overwriting draft message if they happened to edit a page, leave and come back, and then submit. At this point, there is an existing draft, but they are editing/submitting the current version of the page and will overwrite the draft that was created automatically.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    Hi Charla,

Thank you for providing your log file.

In this case, if you could summarize the steps you took to reproduce the behavior that would be very helpful for us to try and reproduce the behavior locally. If you could provide screenshots of the error, that would also be very helpful to narrow things down a bit.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

I was in the engineering site, College engineering.lamar.edu, in the
chemical folder, on an index page and I had clicked submit, which started
workflow. But before workflow, before the submit for workflow, the page
appeared with the message "Another user Š.". And there is an OK or Cancel.
I clicked OK and then the workflow page pops up as normal. The time for
this would have been between 11-12:30 AM CST.

Thank you for the additional information, Charla. Can you confirm that no one else had recently modified that specific Page by viewing it's Audit history? The link for an Asset's audit history can be found under the More tab when viewing the Asset.

Another user did create the page at about 11:17 CST. And then I modified
each one. I do not believe she was editing while I was modifying. And this
happened the other day when I'm certain no one was modifying the pages I was
    working on.

I saw it also when I modified the navigation block in this same site around
    the same time at:

Sometimes I forget to uncheck workflow when working on a page, which is the
case here. I made a change and clicked submit and the message "Another
userŠ" appeared and I clicked OK and then the workflow window. I"m the only
user listed on Audit for this asset.

I can also confirm that the “another user” message received by our guys popped up when no other user was accessing the page or even the parent folder. We have four people having access to those pages (and to the entire site directory for that matter), but every one of us has been working on the separate assignments. The page audit shows only one user for every version.

Hello. FWIW, I and others in my group have experienced this issue as well (running 7.2.2). Our best guess/observation is that it happens only when a user submits a change at precisely the same moment when the auto-save feature saves a draft of that asset.

  16. 16 Posted by Charla on 20 Aug, 2013 06:10 PM

    Charla's Avatar

YES. That's exactly our experience also running 7.2.2. I couldn't determine when it happens. It seems to happen all the time but you are correct, exactly at the same time AutoSave occurs.

We have also been experiencing this (7.2.2). On editing pages also editing XSL formats. And we know no one else is using the page at the time since they are assets in development. Glad that someone else is helping track this down. Doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason to when this occurs. Love to get it resolved. We know this is happening on the development side. Our clients are already a bit shaken by the introduction of the feature in general. But when it works weirdly, its even more impactive.

I have also experienced this. I've only had it happen when editing pages (not files, blocks etc). And yes, it seems to happen when you click submit while the autosave is also submitting. I find myself waiting a few seconds for the autosave to start and complete, in order to avoid submitting at the same time, and having this alert interrupt me.

I'm using Chrome. It started with 7.2.x, but continues to be a problem with 7.4.1.

    Hi all,

We really want to get to the bottom of this but have yet to be able to reproduce the issue. Has anyone come across this issue recently? If so, we would definitely appreciate any more detailed steps you think may help us to see the problem for ourselves.

    Thanks!

    Hi Tim,

Turns out I can repeat this issue at will on v. 7.2.2. (I know, we plan to upgrade asap ;)
    1. Edit content in an index block.
    2. Scroll to bottom of window and watch for a temporary "Saving..." message (see attached image) which appears in the row of buttons (Submit, Save Draft, Cancel) before the Update Draft and Discard Draft buttons appear.
    3. While the "Saving..." message is visible, click the Submit button. You should then see the Overwrite Current Version screen. Works every time.

Hope that helps. And thanks for trying to resolve this!

    Hi Geoff,

Thanks for those steps. I have a couple of followup questions for you:

    • When you say "1. Edit content in an index block.", do you just mean to edit a Page that is being included in an Index Block somewhere?
    • Can you confirm that the message you are seeing is:
Another user updated the current version of this asset while you were editing. Submitting again will override these changes resulting in potential loss of important data.

      and not:
You currently have a draft of this asset. Submitting changes to the current version will discard the draft. To discard the draft, submit again.

I can reliably get the 2nd message to appear, but that seems to be because at that point the Draft has been saved by the time the Submit action takes place.

Thanks for any further info you can provide!

    Tim,
About your first question, sorry, index block wasn't quite right. I think it's technically an XHTML/Data Definition block. I was referring to editing content in a block, whether via the WYSIWYG or the HTML editor.

As for your second question, the first message is what I see: "Another user updated..."

As for replicating the issue at will, it seems I don't get the message if I click Submit too quickly after seeing the "Saving..." message. But considering that message appears for a mere second, if that, I can't say for sure if timing is the only variable at play. But it feels like I see the issue after clicking Submit closer to the moment when the "Saving..." message is replaced by but the Update Draft and Discard Draft buttons, rather than closer to when the "Saving..." message first appears. I hope that makes sense.

    Geoff,

Thanks so much for including that video. I've removed it from this post for privacy purposes but I've included it with our internal issue for this particular problem.

Everyone running into this problem can track progress of the fix here. We'll look to get this fixed sooner rather than later so you can disregard the priority. Keep an eye on release notes for any versions we make available over the next several weeks to see if this made it in.

We'd like to apologies for any inconvenience this might be causing. Thanks to everyone for providing us with information regarding their experience with this particular issue.

Let us know if there are any further questions.
